[She sits across from him, perfectly happy to wait.]
Why else would someone pick white, especially saying it like that? Unless it was your father, he would be thinking something like "the good guys wear white hats, so I'll play white and be the hero".
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
[Do I know actual chess strategy? No. But you bet she's got one, that probably makes the immediacy of her move look like she's thinking "of course that's the piece you'd choose"]
My, it's almost like he raised you and not everything about him is the worst?
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
[we can handwave that Battler does Better Than He Would Have At Start Of Canon But Also Is Still No Match Because The Lad Telegraphs His Moves So Much, he just very much still Battler.]
Except he wasn't a white hat.
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
Maybe he didn't always have the right idea, and he could be callous or cruel too, but I don't think it's bad to be compared to him a bit. I know no one wants to be like their parents, really, but at least you only picked up some charming qualities. I don't say that just because I happen to be attached to that man, it's not about him. Wanting to act like a hero is just sweet.
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
Do you really think it has to be something big to be considered helping? Even if that was true and you never manage to be helpful, it's still thoughtful to care that much. Definitely still cute, too.
Even if it's not nearly as much as you would like though, you do help people. Even just acting like that - that's a big part of the reason you do it, right? It works, that joking around puts people at ease.
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
I'm glad they're looking out for you. And luckily we're playing with just one board today.
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
When chess is actually easy-mode.
... though I guess against you, it's still pretty hard mode.
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
It better be, if you start saying I'm an easy opponent then I'll have nothing left!
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
So you'll take black, then, right?
[the only advantage of white: first move]

Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
[well, she did walk through his mind and read a lot of his memories... but he's taking a seat on the white side with good humor.]

Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
[rude? but he's just moving a pawn for the opening move.]

Except he wasn't a white hat.
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
That really depends on the situation. Sometimes he was, if he wanted to be. He was probably better at it, too.
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
Re: Umineko spoileries going forward, might as well do it now
Then it's just... really foolish. Stupid, maybe.
[a beat and then, with Battler smile on,]
Not that I mind being stupid or foolish, it's just what it is.
